The gray-headed lapwing ( Vanellus cinereus ), Syn .: Hoplopterus cinereus (Blyth, 1842); Microsarcops cinereus (Blyth, 1842); Pluvianus cinereus Blyth, 1842, is a medium-sized wader in the plover family (Charadriidae).
It occurs in China , in adjacent parts of Russia and in Japan . He is winter guest in South Asia from Nepal , North India and Northeast India , Bangladesh and North Indochina.
Its range includes undisturbed habitats in swamps and near rivers and rice fields .
description
The gray-headed lapwing is 34–37 cm tall and weighs between 236 and 296 g. The wingspan is 75-76 cm. It is a large, fairly monochrome lapwing with a gray head, neck and upper chest area, a black, fuzzy chest band and a brown top. The beak is yellow with a black tip, the legs are yellow. In flight the wings are white, the tail has a black ribbon.

The male's call is described as a plaintive “chee-it, chee-it” and an occasional sharp “kik” in flight.
Way of life
As far as is known, the food consists of insects , worms and mollusks . The food intake takes place mainly wading in the water.
The breeding season is between March and April in Japan. The bird lives monogamous .
Danger
The gray-headed lapwing is not considered to be endangered ( Least Concern ).
