The gray-body lichen bear or the hardwood lichen bear ( Eilema lurideola ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the subfamily of the bear moth (Arctiinae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 35 millimeters. They have gray fore wings that have a yellow border that narrows towards the wing tip. The hind wings are pale yellow in color. In their rest position, the wings are slightly rolled up.

Occurrence

They occur in almost all of Europe and Asia as far as Japan . They live in warm, light deciduous forests , bushy heathland areas and on dry grassland, both on the plains and in low mountain ranges. They fly from June to August.

Way of life

The nocturnal moths can be found sitting on heather or thyme during the day . The caterpillars sit on lichen-covered stones or tree trunks, where they eat stone, tree and wood lichen. They overwinter and pupate in a web between lichen or tree bark.
