features

The moths reach a wingspan of 32 to 36 millimeters. They have elongated, pale ocher yellow, slightly light grayish forewings, which may be darkly colored around the head. The upper edge is indistinctly colored more strongly yellow. In the males, in contrast to E. complana, there are no scent scales ( androconia) in the middle of the underside of the forewing. The hind wings are yellow. They have gray scales on the underside at the upper edge. The body is dark.

The caterpillars are light beige in color and have two black lines on the back and a row of black dots on each side. They have short, bristly, light hair.

Occurrence and distribution

They occur in southern and central Europe . In Western Europe they are only found in certain areas. They live on warm, sunny slopes, in sandy areas and on dry pine heaths . You can find them up to an altitude of 1,900 meters.

Flight and caterpillar times

One generation of the ocher lichen bear flies from the beginning to the end of August. The caterpillars appear from mid-May to mid-July. The data available on this are sparse, however.

Way of life

The moths are very warm-loving. You can be attracted by light at night.

Food of the caterpillars

The caterpillars feed on stone and earth lichens, but they can also be found on blue-green fiber umbrella ( Trinia glauca ) and golden aster ( Aster linosyris ). These plants tower above the vegetation, which enables the caterpillars to escape from the heat of the ground under their inflorescences.
