The coniferous lichen bear or the coniferous yellow hem lichen bear ( Eilema depressa ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the subfamily of the bear moth (Arctiinae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 28 to 36 millimeters. The females have brown-gray hind and fore wings. The males are clearly lighter, colored ocher. They are missing the yellow stripes ( Kostal stripes ) on the front wing edge. With them the wing tip of the forewings is clearly darkened. Both sexes are slightly yellowish in color around the head.

Similar species

Occurrence and distribution

They occur in southern and central Europe and in the south of Scandinavia . They prefer to live in sandy pine and coniferous forests , rarely in mixed forests . They are usually isolated, but can be numerous locally.

Way of life

The moths fly from July to early September. They appear later than the rest of the lichen bears.

Food and development of the caterpillars

The caterpillars feed on lichens that grow on conifers , pines and spruce trees. They overwinter before they hatch as butterflies.
