action

Samantha Kofer works as an attorney in New York for the largest law firm in the world. Her work gives her little joy and little fulfillment. After the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers in September 2008, there were mass layoffs of lawyers everywhere. Samantha will be on leave provided that she works for a free year as a lawyer for a nonprofit of her choice. Then she is offered the prospect of a return. After a long search, Samantha finds a job at the non-profit law firm Mountain Law Clinic in Brady, a town of 2000 souls. Instead of rich clients, she now represents poor, disadvantaged people.

On her first visit to Brady, she meets Attorney Donovan, who tells her about mining and pollution , and Mattie Wyatte, the head of the Mountain Law Clinic. Mattie tells her the story of Donovan: His father inherited a piece of land that he leased to a coal company. The company did not pay the rent, however, and a mudslide triggered by the coal mining tore the family home away. Donovan's mother kills herself out of desperation, so Donovan grows up with Mattie. Later as a lawyer, Donovan dedicated his life to fighting the coal companies.

Samantha starts work at the Mountain Law Clinic, and Donovan walks and sightseeing tours to show her the pollution caused by the coal companies. Samantha declines a job offer from Donovan, she continues her job at the Mountain Law Clinic and meets Buddy Ryzer, a miner with pneumonia , who asks Samantha for help with a lawsuit against his employer.

Donovan files a lawsuit against Krull Mining in court because the company has knowingly contaminated groundwater for 15 years . Donovan previously stole sensitive documents from Krull Mining in support of his lawsuit. He is also suing Buddy Ryzer's employer for having removed medical records in order to cheat Buddy Ryzer out of his pension and compensation for pain and suffering. On November 24, 2008, Donovan died under unexplained circumstances in a plane crash, which is why the lawsuits filed are about to be terminated. Jeff, Donovan's brother, hid the stolen Krull Mining documents in a cave on the family property. Because Jeff and Samantha want to continue the lawsuit against Krull Mining, they are shadowed and threatened, so Samantha considers returning to New York. She also received a highly paid job offer as a lawyer in New York. After Buddy Ryzer shoots himself out of desperation, Jeff pulls the stolen Krull Mining documents out of their hiding place, in the course of which there is a shootout with persecutors who obviously work for Krull Mining. The documents are brought to safety and given to a judge. Samantha rejects the highly paid job offer from New York and stays in Brady in order to work there as a permanent but poorly paid lawyer at the Mountain Law Clinic.
