Green Hell is a computer game in the survival game genre from 2018, which is set in the Amazon rainforest and is developed and marketed by Creepy Jar. A co-op multiplayer mode was released on April 7, 2020.

Gameplay

The game is played in first person view in single player mode or in co-op multiplayer. It is an open-world simulation in which the player must ensure their own survival by collecting raw materials and food as well as crafting objects and accommodation. The player starts out in a lonely jungle camp without any further context. The environment of the game changes dynamically and influences the mental state of the game character, e.g. B. in the form of hallucinations . Furthermore, the player must also pay attention to a balanced diet, which is explained by a smartwatch . The player must also sleep enough and must maintain his health by z. B. contact with poisonous animals or unsavory food is avoided and injuries are avoided. To restore health, the player can make medicine and bandages. The compass and GPS serve as navigation tools . In the optional story mode, the player follows a framework plot that revolves around the search for his lost lover. The difficulty can be changed from "A walk" (very easy) to "Green Hell" (very difficult). There are a total of five levels of difficulty. The game is still under development. Regular updates follow. Among other things, it is planned to implement a story mode in the co-op multiplayer.

The story revolves around the anthropologist and rainforest researcher Jake Higgins, who wakes up in the jungle on the edge of the Amazon River . He tries to familiarize himself with the environment in order to ensure his survival and to find his lover Mia again. She is a linguist and wants to establish the first contact with the indigenous people of the Yabahuca. The plot is told from the first person perspective by Jake, who notices that his wife is in danger. His only connection to her is through a radio.

Green Hell comes from the independent developer Creepy Jar in Warsaw . a. Contributed to The Witcher 2 and Dying Light .

The game is since August 2018 Early Access on Steam available and has been repeatedly extended since then. On September 5, 2019, Release 1.0 was released with a story mode. A version for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One is in development and should appear in 2020.

Green Hell received mostly positive reviews for the release . On Steam, 86% of over 16,600 reviews are positive. Metacritic names a Metascore of 77 out of 100 and a user score of 7.6 out of 10. GameStar praises the quality and depth of the game compared to other survival games, as well as the realistic struggle with a “beautiful but […] deadly jungle”. The player receives little help and has to teach himself things and gain experience, which is a crucial part of the game concept and contributes significantly to the authentic atmosphere of being lost in the jungle. The combat system, on the other hand, is criticized for being cumbersome and imprecise, as attacks sometimes go nowhere. Furthermore, the size of the game world, the animations of the animals and opponents and the predictable story sections are criticized. The textures, light effects, animal models, the crafting and progress system, the sound design, the design of the flora and fauna and the dynamic game world are also praised.
