The Green Ice Rises are a group of ice domes in the Shackleton Ice Shelf off the coast of Queen Marie Land in West Antarctica . They tower 5 miles east of Henderson Island , where the ice shelf overcomes a ridge below.
The US cartographer Gardner Dean Blodgett (* 1925) mapped it in 1955 using aerial photographs of the US Operation Highjump (1946–1947). The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named them in the same year after Duane L. Green, radio operator with the US-American Operation Windmill (1947-1948) for the establishment of astronomical observation stations along the Kaiser Wilhelm II coast , the Knox coast and the Budd coast between January and February 1948.
