Green Manor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Green Manor is a Belgian crime series that was developed by the illustrator Denis Bodart , in a semi- funny style, based on the texts by Fabien Vehlmann , for the traditional Belgian magazine Spirou . The coloring comes from Scarlett Smulkowski , who u. a. also colored the third volume of Marshal Blueberry drawn by Michel Rouge .

Edition history

The series was first published by Spirou on November 11, 1998 in issue 3161 , the first German publication was in ZACK magazine in issue 44 (February 2003). After being pre-printed in the magazine, the short stories were initially summarized in three albums (German in the ZACK edition of the Mosaik Steinchen for Steinchen Verlag ), each with a frame story. A complete edition was later published, the German version of which was published by Piredda Verlag in January 2016 . This is not a 1: 1 takeover of the French Complete Edition from 2011, but contains - as the only international edition - two further Green Manor short stories that were only published in Spirou after the French Complete Edition was published. In addition, the first album was also published as a small-format booklet for Free Comic Day 2011.

content

The macabre-ironic series consists exclusively of short stories, all of which revolve around the topic of "The Perfect Crime". The pivotal point of the stories and an overarching and series-creating element is the eponymous English men's club Green Manor , in which the stories are told.

In the series Green Manor of the translator of the series into German, Martin Surman, are "crimes, perversions and a good dose of humor mixed together in an extraordinary way." In the words of The eponymous Green Manor is a "club of top London society at the end of 19th century, in the atmosphere of Sherlock Holmes and Jack the Ripper . "

reception

For the Belgian broadcaster RTBF , Denis Marc judged in 2012 that the 16 stories contained in the French-language complete edition were “little gems of black humor and with an 'Old English Style' atmosphere. The contrast between the seemingly 'good society' of England and the sediment of the city [London] is fully played out, so that it becomes clear that the customs of the two are ultimately not that different. "

And in 2016 Christian Endres from the Berliner Tagesspiegel praised the “convincing historical atmosphere” and the “beautiful, detailed artwork” of the “well-constructed short stories”, especially their “excellent punch lines” after the German translation of the complete edition was published.

Barbara Ebenhoch writes about Denis Bodart's drawings on her website Emma's Comicworld : "The muted, brown-colored pictures by Denis Bodart create a cozy, deceptive comfort that almost makes the reader doubt the cunning, insidious characters of those involved."

Awards

At the Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d'Angoulême 2002, Green Manor was shortlisted for the Best Scenario Award . At the festival Lucca Comics & Games in Tuscan Lucca won Green Manor in 2016 the prize for best comic short story (fumetto breve) .
