Greet Kershaw

Greet Kershaw , also Gretha Kershaw , née Greet Slutier (* 1922 or 1923 in Amsterdam ; † January 30, 2008 ) was a Dutch- American anthropologist .

Life

Greet (Gretha) Kershaw grew up in the Netherlands and became a social worker. As a student of anthropology , she lived in Kenya from 1955 to 1957 with the Kikuyu , who at that time formed the center of the Mau Mau movement .

She graduated from the University of Chicago in 1960 , where she also received her PhD in 1972 . From 1966 until her retirement in the late 1980s, she was Professor of Anthropology at California State University, Long Beach .

After retiring, she wrote a book about the Mau Mau movement. To do this, she used her detailed, carefully collected data on the life of the Kikuyu in the four villages of Thuita, Itara, Mbari ya Igi and Nginduri in Central (Kenya) from 1955 to 1957. She also revisited her locations and studied the consequences of the movement.
