Greg Burk

Greg Burk (born June 24, 1969 in Lansing , Minnesota ) is an American jazz pianist and composer .

Greg Burk grew up in a family of musicians; he began to play the piano at an early age. In high school he was a member of the school jazz band. He studied at the University of Massachusetts Amherst with Yusef Lateef and Archie Shepp ; he then earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan . He then moved to Bratislava and toured Central Europe with his own trio before returning to the United States. In the jazz scene of Detroit and Ann Arbor he worked a. a. with James Carter , Rodney Whitaker and Gerald Cleaver . At the age of 25 he continued his studies (with George Russell , Danilo Pérez and Paul Bley ) at the New England Conservatory of Music , where he received his Masters.

Burk then stayed in Boston; after his solo debut album Progressions and Digressions he presented a number of productions under his own name for the label Soul Note and 482 Music , a. a. with Jerry Bergonzi and Steve Swallow . In 1999 he became an assistant professor at the Berklee School of Music . He has lived in Rome since 2004 and teaches in the Florence Jazz Program at New York University .

In his Greg Burk Trio he played with bassist Jon Robinson and drummer Bob Moses ( Checking In , 2001); In 2013 he appeared at festivals in Italy and Switzerland with Jon Robinson and Gerald Cleaver and Stefano Senni and Enzo Carpentieri. Burk also belonged to the Either / Orchestra ( Afro-Cubism 2002, Live in Addis 2004). In addition to his work in jazz, he played keyboards in the fusion band Fat Dragon (album Dream After a Large Lunch , 2000) and founded Bouncing Bach with guitarist Garrison Fewell , who played Bach themes for a jazz quartet. In the field of jazz he was involved in 21 recording sessions between 1997 and 2010. a. with John Tchicai .
