Gregor Anton Oginski , lit. Grigalius Antanas Oginskis , Polish Grzegorz Antoni Ogiński , Russian Григо́рий Анто́ний Оги́нский , (born June 23, 1654 ; † October 17, 1709 in Lublin ) was a Polish-Lithuanian hetman and governor- general of the Duchy of Samogit in 1698.

Life

In 1690, 1695 and 1696 he was elected ambassador to the Waukawysk district at the Diet .

Oginski was one of the leaders of the uprising against the Lithuanian magnates Sapieha . His greatest success in the Lithuanian Civil War was the victory, on November 18, 1700, in the Battle of Olkieniki . After the battle, Michał Franciszek Sapieha , the main leader of the Sapieha faction, as well as many other members of the family and their supporters, were murdered by a drunken mob.

Oginski was a supporter and close ally of King August II. He was from November 20, 1703 field hetman of Lithuania . Shortly before his death in 1709 he was appointed Grand Hetman of Lithuania .

For the support of the Polish crown and the Grand Duke of Lithuania, Augustus the Strong, he was awarded the Order of the White Eagle .

His father was Jan Samuelowicz Ogiński (d. 1684), also a hetman. He had a son, Kazimierz Marcjan Ogiński (d. 1727).

He was known as a passionate lover of music. He had his own orchestra in his court. All of the Ogińskis who followed were great music fans or musicians themselves.
