Gregor Benisowitsch

Gregor Benisowitsch (born January 28, 1957 in Zurich ) is a Swiss mountaineer and holds a doctorate in law. He works as a freelance lawyer and, as an alpine expert, writes reports on mountain accidents. In alpine terrain he was a sport climber from the very beginning and made numerous first ascents on extreme rock both at home and abroad. On an expedition to China , he managed the first ascent of two six-thousanders. He is considered one of the most renowned defense lawyers and injured parties in Switzerland. Before that he worked for two years as a legal assistant at the court in Horgen and then for 13 years as an examining magistrate in the canton of Zurich . He is the founder and president of the Swiss specialist agency for alpine law.

Live and act

After graduating from the Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftlichen Gymnasium (MNG) in Zurich, Benisowitsch studied law at the University of Zurich , where he graduated with a licentiate. From 1985 he worked as an assistant for Professors Dietrich Schindler and Daniel Thürer. In 1987 he moved to the district court of Horgen ZH and was elected district attorney in Zurich and Dietikon in 1989. In 1993 he received his doctorate with his dissertation on the criminal law assessment of mountain accidents and founded the Swiss specialist agency for alpine law, of which he is still President today. He completed his training to become an SAC tour leader and indoor climbing instructor. From 1995 to 2002, Benisowitsch served as examining magistrate to combat major cases of fraud and economic crimes (including the Swissair case). In 2003 he passed the bar exam and has since worked in his own practice in Thalwil ZH as an alpine expert, criminal defense attorney and injured party representative. He is married to Brigitte Benisowitsch-Germann and has four grown children.

Alpinism

As a child, Benisowitsch was taken to the mountains by his parents. At the age of six he stood on the first three-thousand-meter peak and in the following ten years he climbed well over 100 high Alpine peaks.

From 1975 to 1977 he climbed various extreme classics as a rope team leader (including Badile NE-Wand, Cengalo NW-Pfeiler and Fuorikante). Single-handedly, he mastered several alpine rock tours up to the 6th level of difficulty. In 1978 he managed the free ascent of the Brown crack on the Aiguille-Blaitière west face (6 b / c), the most difficult passage in the Mont-Blanc area (F) at the time, and a free solo ascent of the white wall (7a / b ; 20 ft.) From 1979 to 1980 there were four first ascent in the Bockmattli with Martin Scheel (including Supertramp and Andromeda), as well as the second ascent of the cult route “Superlative” on the Föhrenturm (Canton Schwyz). In 1981 he made the first ascent of two six-thousanders as part of an expedition to the Minya-Konka Mountains (7600 m) in China (Szetschuan Province). In 1982 he climbed the route "Ripper" in the Joshua Tree National Park (California, USA) rope-free with a grade of 5.11 (30 ft.).

With Georg Furger, he succeeded in 1983/1984 in the first ascent of the heavily overhanging "Isenburg" on the Chöpfberg in the canton of Schwyz (7a, A0 or 7c). He then visited various well-known sport climbing areas in the Alpine countries, Turkey, Thailand, South Africa, the USA, Australia and New Zealand, where he repeated routes up to grade 7b / c. In the Murg, Dischma Valley, Susten and Gotthard Passes, in Chironico, in the Hailoko Valley (China), in New York, in Yosemite, in Joshua Tree (California, USA) and in Wharepapa South (New Zealand) he mastered boulder problems up to Fb 7a / b. Above Amden (Canton St. Gallen), he opened up the “Zuma Beach” area and the west tower of the Vorder Mattstock, climbing almost all of the 15 routes (between 6a + and 7c, as well as two open projects in the 8a / b area) red point .

He has been a regular guest in the Muscat region (Oman) since 2007, where he was able to climb various deep water soloing routes (DWS) up to grade 7c for the first time.
