Hindustan (song)

Hindustan is a song that Oliver G. Wallace and Harold Weeks wrote and published in 1918. The song became a popular standard in the repertoire of numerous Dixieland bands.

Oliver G. Wallace and Harold Weeks published the song in 1918 by Forster Music Publisher, Inc., Chicago. Hindustan was one of the songs that were written from the late 1910s to the 20s, the one with the exotic , with the flair the stranger played in text and music. These included songs like "Under the Yellow Arabian Moon" (1915), " Dardanella " (1920) and " Nagasaki " (1928).

First recordings and later cover versions

The musicians who recorded the song from 1918 onwards included Campbell and Burr (Columbia, A2661), Dan Kildare ( Dan & Harvey's Jazz Band ), Joseph C. Smith's Orchestra (Victor) the English Savoy Quartet , the Swedish Vikings Dansorkester . From the late 1920s, Ben Bernie , Bob Crosby , the Casa Loma Orchestra , Alvino Rey , Artie Shaw , Frank Froeba and Jack Teagarden also recorded the song.

In Germany, the title Kapellmeister Tauber, who was engaged in the Berlin Admirals-Palast , recorded with his dance orchestra in 1919 with Polyphon; it appeared on Parlophone “played by Marek Weber with his artist band from the Hotel Esplanade , Berlin” in January 1920. Also in January 1920, the conductor Carl Rosenthal recorded it with the orchestra of the Palais de Danse Berlin for Odeon. The Vox orchestra recorded “Hindustan” on Vox 1046 (Matr. 349 B) in January 1922.

In France, the Célèbre Fox-trot appeared on the disque "Gramophone" (HMV) K 667 / 230.938 (Matr. S 20849 u) exécuté par L'Orchestre Tzigane Vahrna (Gypsy band Vahrna). Oct. 29, 1919; on Pathé 8292 (mat. 67011) he was played by the “Wadsworth Novelty Dance Orchestra” (saxophone, xylophone et piano), which was directed by the saxophonist Wheeler Wadsworth .

In Spain la Orquesta del Gramófono, Barcelona played the Foxtrot for disco "Gramófono" (HMV) AE 27 / 260.839 (Matr. Bb 476-I). The orquestrina tzigan Americane Nic Fusly (American Gypsy Band Nic Fusly) recorded him there on June 22, 1920 (Disco "Gramófono" (HMV) 650.697, Matr. 420 am).

In the post-war period he was u. a. Covered by Jimmie Lunceford , George Brunies , Doc Evans , Ralph Sutton , Sharkey Bonano , Sidney Bechet , Emile Barnes , George Lewis , Freddy Randall , Frankie Carle and Eddie Condon . The discographer Tom Lord lists a total of 391 (as of 2015) cover versions in the field of jazz .
