Emile Barnes

Emile Barnes (born February 18, 1892 in New Orleans , † March 2, 1970 ibid) was an American jazz clarinetist of New Orleans jazz .

Barnes studied clarinet with Lorenzo Tio Junior, Alphonse Picou , George Baquet and Big Eye Louis Nelson and was active as a musician in New Orleans from 1908, played with Buddy Petit and in the band of Chris Kelly during the 1920s . He worked mostly outside the music scene for the next two decades, but played in the Camelia Band of Wooden Joe Nicholas in the 1930s and with Kid Howard in the late 1940s . He became known outside of New Orleans with the revival that accompanied the opening of the Preservation Hall in 1961. He appeared on several Folkways Records New Orleans compilations from 1951/52 and recorded for Jazzology in 1961 and 1963.

His brother Polo Barnes is also a clarinetist.
