Gregory I. Goose

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gregory I. Goose (also Gregor gene ; * in Volkach ; † 26. August 1701 ) was from 1686 to 1701 abbot of the Benedictine monastery in the Lower Franconian Obertheres .

Life

Gregor goose was probably in the second half of the 17th century in the hochstiftischen born official city Volkach. The sources are silent about the family of the future abbot. Likewise, the school education of goose is in the dark. Gregor Gans probably entered the Benedictine monastery Theres at an early age, which like his hometown Volkach was in the diocese of Würzburg , but remained under the rule of the Prince-Bishop of Bamberg .

After the death of Abbot Anton Reuter in August 1686, an abbot election in the monastery became necessary, from which Gans emerged victorious on September 11, 1686. He soon promoted the monastery Rosary Brotherhood , which had been founded by Abbot Johannes Bärmann. Gans had a reputation for being a good preacher, and as early as 1688 he succeeded in finding a compromise between Würzburg and Bamberg, both of which were fighting for supremacy over the monastery. From then on, Würzburg was solely responsible for the abbey.

The abbot also succeeded in rounding off the dominion of the monastery after the Thirty Years' War alienated many areas . So he exchanged the patronage of the Ascension Church in Großwenkheim for the places Marktsteinach and Gädheim in the immediate vicinity of the abbey. Marktsteinach and Gädheim were previously part of the Maria Bildhausen monastery. Abbot Gregor Gans died on August 26, 1701.
