Gregor "Fritz" Kuhn (* in the 19th or 20th century ; † September 8, 1922 in Monza ) was a German automobile racing driver .

Racing career

Not much is known about Gregor's life. At the beginning of the 1920s, he started as a works driver for Austro-Daimler . At the Targa Florio 1922 , which took place over four laps on the 108 km long Medio circuito delle Madonie in Sicily , Kuhn finished 22nd.

At the 1922 Italian Grand Prix on the second weekend of September at the Autodromo di Monza near Milan , which had just opened a week earlier , the Austro-Daimler team competed with three of the Austro-Daimler ADS II-Rs designed by Ferdinand Porsche . The cars were piloted by Kuhn, Alfred Neubauer and Lambert Pocher . Back then, the course included an oval , which is now closed, and the route that is still used today in a slightly modified form. Due to its long straights and the oval, the course was considered dangerous and very fast.

On Saturday, September 9, 1922, Kuhn had a fatal accident in training for the Grand Prix planned for the following day. The accident was triggered by a broken spoked wheel on Kuhn's car. The vehicle then skidded and rolled over several times. Kuhn was thrown out of the car and died on the spot. His co-driver Fiedler survived with serious injuries.

The Austro-Daimler then withdrew its team from the Grand Prix. Only eight of the 39 cars originally registered went into the race in front of around 200,000 spectators. The winner was Pietro Bordino in a Fiat 804 ahead of his teammate Felice Nazzaro and Pierre de Vizcaya on Bugatti .
