Gregor Virant (born December 4, 1969 in Ljubljana ) is a Slovenian administrative scientist and politician.

Life

He studied law at the University of Ljubljana , where he in 1998 with a thesis on expropriation and restriction of property rights for the common good doctorate . He initially worked for the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Slovenia ; from 2000 to 2004 he was State Secretary in the Ministry of the Interior.

After the parliamentary elections in 2004 , he was appointed minister in the government of Janez Janša in the newly created Ministry of Public Administration. In the government of Prime Minister Janša, Virant was considered a "liberal figurehead". After Janša's defeat in the parliamentary elections in 2008 , Irma Pavlinič Krebs became Virant's successor. Since then, Virant has been working as an assistant professor at the Faculty of Administration at the University of Ljubljana.

In the early parliamentary elections in 2011 , Virant stood as the top candidate of the newly founded Gregor Virant's list of citizens , which is considered to be part of the political center . He has been a member of parliament ever since . He was elected President of Parliament on December 22, 2011 ; he resigned from this office in January 2013, and was succeeded by the social democrat Janko Veber . From 2013 to 2014, Virant was Minister of the Interior in Alenka Bratušek's government .
