Gregoria

Gregoria ( Middle Greek Γρηγόρια ; * around 612; † after 650) was the wife of the Byzantine emperor Constantine III. and mother of Konstans' II.

Life

Gregoria was the daughter of Nicetas, a cousin and general of the emperor Herakleios . Raised in the exarchate of Carthage , she was married in Constantinople around 629/630 to Herakleios' 17-year-old son and co-emperor Constantine. The couple had at least two sons, Herakleios (who later became Constans II) and Theodosius , who was executed by his brother in 660. They are also assigned a daughter Maria (Manyanh) , who later became the wife of the last Sassanid ruler , Yazdegerd III. (632-651)

Emperor Herakleios died on February 11, 641. Constantine III. and Gregoria succeeded them, but had to share the rule with Heraklonas and his generally hated mother Martina . Constantine died of tuberculosis just three months later , Heraklonas and Martina were overthrown at the end of September. The eleven-year-old Konstans remained as sole ruler.

Gregoria's political role under the reign of Constans II is not mentioned in the Byzantine sources. However, it is very likely that she reigned for her underage son until around 650, supported by a college of senators under the leadership of Patriarch Paul II , but temporarily ousted by the ambitious general Valentinos in the years 642 and 643 . Perhaps it was Martina's chilling example that made it advisable for Gregoria not to appear too openly in government affairs.
