Gregorio García de la Cuesta (born May 9, 1741 in La Lastra in the Valley of Tudanca ( Cantabria ), † December 24, 1811 in Palma ) was a Spanish captain general and president of the Supreme Council of Castile (Consejo Supremo de Castilla).

Cuesta was after the Spanish popular uprising against the French occupation from May 1808 corps leader in the Spanish main army under General Castaños . During the Battle of Bailén in mid-July, his troops were involved in the containment of the French Corps Dupont in Andalusia. 1809 was the commander in chief of the Spanish troops in Extremadura , on March 28, 1809 he was badly beaten by Marshal Victor in the battle of Medellín east of Merida . Shortly afterwards he was able to defeat the French troops under Victor and Sebastiani in the Battle of Talavera on July 27 and 28, together with General Wellesley . For this victory Cuesta was appointed captain general. Left on their own, his troops were defeated on August 3 at the Battle of Arzobispo . On August 12, 1809, Cuesta suffered a stroke in Deleitosa (Extrematura) and was replaced by General Eguia. After the Spanish retreat across the Tagus, Cuesta had to say goodbye.

Cuesta went to Mallorca and died after another stroke at the end of 1811, his grave is in the Cathedral of Palma .
