Gregory David Roberts (* 1952 in Melbourne as Gregory John Peter Smith) is an Australian author and convicted felon.

Life

Roberts was sentenced to 23 years in prison in 1978 for armed robbery. The reason for the attacks was his heroin addiction and the resulting pressure to buy . According to his own account, Roberts became addicted when he did not receive custody of his then 3-year-old daughter after his divorce in 1976. After serving two years of his sentence at HM Prison Pentridge, Australia , he escaped by climbing over the front wall with a fellow inmate at noon. After a stopover in New Zealand , he settled in Mumbai , India . In 1990 he was caught in Frankfurt and extradited to his homeland. There he spent six years in prison, two of them in solitary confinement. During this time, he also began working on his debut novel Shantaram , based on his experiences in Mumbai.

The title of the partly autobiographical novel is based on his nickname, which is given to him in the novel by the mother of his best friend. The film rights were acquired in 2004 from actor Johnny Depp for the sum of $ 2 million. Roberts also wrote a screenplay for the Shantaram novel and another for the film Allegra .
