Boundless is a documentary by Josephine Landertinger Forero. The film tells about the everyday life of three binational couples from Berlin . It was created at a time when the mainstream media received mainly negative reports about migrants in Germany. In the film, binational couples are a positive example, showing society how to become more tolerant and inclusive. The multimedia project Grenzenlos consists of a 45-minute documentary film and a website with photos, audio pieces and articles in which other binational couples and their stories are presented.
The couples
Rhan is South Korean , but socialized in a fairly German way, as she was only 5 years old when her parents moved to Germany. They are now living in Seoul again . But Rhan doesn't fly to Korea very often. The man David is rather reserved. Because of her origins, his parents never accepted Rhan as his partner. Her son Daniel is now doing his A-levels and is flying to Seoul this summer. There he wants to learn Korean because his mother (consciously) did not pass the language on to him.
In Ismail Ünsal, a child of the first generation of guest workers, is married to Kerstin, who originally comes from East Berlin (Lichtenberg). She brought a daughter (Gloria) into this marriage. Gloria's father was a contract worker from Mozambique in the GDR. So Kerstin has a failed binational relationship behind her. Kerstin and Ismail also have a son, Deniz. Neither Gloria nor Deniz speak Turkish.
Ode is only 26 years old. With Christian, who is 40, she already has a 2-year-old daughter. Ode is currently doing her A-levels. She also has her own fashion label, named just like her daughter - Malaika. Since her daughter is a “mixture” of Africa and Europe, as Ode himself puts it, she also called her label Malaika. It is very important for Ode and Christian that their daughter learns the Ghanaian language Twi . Every weekend the little one has the opportunity to speak to her Ghanaian grandparents, who also live in Berlin.
The film
The documentary borderless shows a reality from Germany. Every third child here has at least one parent with a migrant background , according to the Association of Binational Families and Partnerships. So Germany is already a mixed society. When two people from different cultures come together, this is the highest expression of integration. This reality and the negative public perception of migrants, often combined with negative media reports, diverge. The documentary Grenzlos aims to counteract the often negative reporting by showing migrants in their everyday lives who are well integrated, speak good German and make a contribution to their environment. At the same time, binational couples serve as a comment, because as the highest expression of integration , they show society how it can become more tolerant and inclusive.
The film team
Josephine Landertinger Forero, an Austrian-Colombian filmmaker, wrote the screenplay for and directed in Grenzenlos . The camera was taken over by camerawoman Yergalem Taffere from Eritrea . The sound engineer Konstantin Kirilow and the film editor Angelina Atmadjova-Cutter come from Bulgaria . The sound editing was done by César Fernández from Cuba . The film team itself is therefore a plea for inclusive, peaceful coexistence.
