Greta Bauer-Schwind (born November 4, 1904 in Brno ; † March 13, 1944 there ) was a German-language poet .

Life

Greta Bauer-Schwind was a great-granddaughter of the painter Moritz von Schwind . Due to her lung disease, she had to break off her musical training and stayed in Schöllschitz for summer holidays, in Davos , in northern Italy and in South Tyrol. In 1932 she returned to her hometown Brno.

Due to her lung disease, the author was severely restricted in her activities, which determined her literary work. Her life from 1904 to 1944 was marked by changing political events in her homeland. As a member of the German-speaking population of South Moravia , she had to experience the end of the monarchy, the emergence of Czechoslovakia , with all the international law problems relating to the Sudetenland , the interwar period and National Socialism .

During this historically turbulent time, the author created her works that thematically stood out from other authors. In her poetry, Greta Bauer – Schwind deals with nature, music and mythology. The poor health and the lack of contact with the outside world allows the author to live in a parallel world that was in contradiction to the story and the literary environment.

Greta Bauer-Schwind's texts received attention in the interwar period, during the Nazi era and also after 1945. The reception by associations of expellees and publishers and the assessment of literary work after 1945 show the difficulty of assessing this author. Greta Bauer-Schwind's poems were also broadcast on the radio during and after National Socialism.
