Gretagrund (or Greta-Grund ) are sandbanks a few km south-southeast of the Estonian island of Ruhnu in the Riga Bay . It is 1.80 m deep on average. In the east of the island there is still the sandy bottom , in the north the Sturgrund .
Protected area
On August 12, 2010, the government approved the creation of the Gretagrund Sandbanks Restricted Sanctuary to ensure the conservation of valuable habitats and protected bird species in the area. According to the draft, Gretagrund was protected as a nature reserve in Saare County at the suggestion of the Estonian Nature Fund . A new nature reserve with an area of 14,727.7 ha was created in the area southeast of Ruhnu . The area lies in the territorial sea of Estonia.
According to experts, the Gretagrund is a unique and unspoiled marine habitat that occupies an important place among other natural values of Estonia. According to the draft, the underwater sand dunes and rocks as well as the bird species listed in Annex 1 of the EU Birds Directive plus the following non-listed migratory bird species are protected in this protected area: Migratory birds : black-throated diver ( Gavia arctica ), little gull ( Larus minutus ), red-throated diver ( Gavia stellata ), long-tailed duck ( Clangula hyemalis ), velvet duck ( Melanitta fusca ) and razorbill ( Alca torda ).
The regulation will also guarantee the protection of Estonia's largest spawning area in the future . It will offer opportunities to preserve the uniqueness of the marine habitats in the region.
It is forbidden to destroy and damage habitats for which the area is protected and to disturb the protected species. Activities that endanger the favorable condition of habitats and protected species are also prohibited.
During an investigation in 2008, Paramysis intermedia (from the genus Paramysis ) was found in the Gretagrund as a new species in the Baltic Sea. Shrimp of this type are more likely to be found in the southern North Atlantic, Mediterranean and Black Sea .
