from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gretel Loher-Schmeck (* December 6, 1907 in Augsburg as Gretel Schmeck; † 2003 ) was a German artist of late expressionism .

Life

The artist Gretel Schmeck was born in 1907 in the Philippine Welser House in Augsburg as the first daughter of the doctor Dr. Hermann Schmeck and his wife Veronika were born. The parents encouraged their daughter's artistic talent at an early age through private piano lessons and art portfolios by old masters. The visual arts and music kept them busy. After graduating from high school in 1926, however, after much deliberation, Gretel Schmeck decided against a career as a pianist. Instead, she chose to study mathematics and physics.

After just one year, she switched again to the technical college in Munich to become a higher education teacher. There she met the artist Joseph Loher , who would later become her husband.

After the state examination, Gretel Loher-Schmeck taught at the vocational and commercial school in Augsburg for several years. She was a member of the Augsburger Kunstverein and exhibited there until 1938. In 1933 she and her husband entered Karl Caspar's academy class . The small oeuvre of her oil paintings comes from this formative phase of the 30s for the artist.

The artist had her first successes in 1934 when she exhibited her lithograph “Fränkisches Mädchen” in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich. Her work was also valued at the Augsburg Art Association. Numerous excursions followed in the area around Murnau, the Chiemsee and in the mountains. The oil paintings created here are among the highlights of Gretel Loher-Schmeck's work alongside her children's pictures. In 1937 she left the Munich Art Academy out of solidarity with her teacher Karl Caspar ( Degenerate Art ), who had been ostracized by the National Socialists .

After 1940, the painter, who came from a middle-class background, began not only to live in the country, but also to say goodbye to oil painting. In order to feed the family, the son Martin was born in 1938, as a self-sufficient source with kept chickens, geese and goats, the artist only had time for sketches in the nearby Ebersberger Forst or later on trips to Rome. Her husband often used these drawings as a template for his oil paintings. In 2003 Gretel Loher-Schmeck died shortly before her 96th birthday.

Works

Works by her and her husband are in public and private collections. The Neue Pinakothek Munich, Bayerischer Rundfunk, the Ebersberg District Office and the Grafing City Museum have some exhibits.
