Johan Wilhelm Palmstruch (born March 3, 1770 in Stockholm ; † August 30, 1811 ) was a Swedish military man who became famous as a draftsman and engraver .

Life

Palmstruch became an ensign in the Swedish fleet in 1786 and as such took part in acts of war and an expedition to Morocco . From 1797 to 1798 he was a teacher at a Masonic school and afterwards he devoted himself to agriculture for some time.

Palmstruch's main work was the Svensk Botanik (Swedish Botany ) table work, the first part of which appeared in 1802 and for whose production he was later given a royal privilege. The drawings come mainly from Palmstruch itself, mostly made from nature; the engravings were initially made by Major Carl Wilhelm Fröberg Wenus (Venus) (1770–1851), later by Palmstruch and partly by Johan Gustaf Ruckman . The text was first written by Conrad Quensel and, after his death, by Olof Peter Swartz , who checked the work on behalf of the Science Academy from the start . Palm bush also started the Svensk Zoologi (Swedish Zoology ) table factory, the main production of which was carried out by Gustaf Johan Billberg . Seven volumes of the botanical work had been completed by Palmstruch's death.

Gustaf Billberg, who later sold the plant to the state, took on this task as well. The last volumes were created by various authors on behalf of the Science Academy. The rare tenth and final issue of the eleventh volume appeared in 1843. Svensk Zoolgi was completed in 1825 by Billberg.
