Gustaf Johan Billberg

Gustaf Johan Billberg (born June 14, 1772 in Karlskrona , † November 26, 1844 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish zoologist , botanist and anatomist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Billb. ".

Although he was a lawyer, he was very interested in the natural sciences . That was also worth the reputation of a dilettante to him. In addition, he had a reputation as a conspirator because he campaigned for the election of Carl Peter Forsberg , the adopted son of his friend Carl Peter Thunberg , to the Swedish Academy of Sciences . In 1820 Billberg was elected a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences .

In 1796 he married Margareta Ferelius. For the second time he married Helena Maria Ehinger in 1801.

After the death of Johan Wilhelm Palmstuch, he continued to work on his work Svensk Botanik .

Honor taxon

The genus Billbergia in the bromeliad family (Bromeliaceae) was dedicated to him by Carl Peter Thunberg .
