from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Conrad Quensel (born December 10, 1767 in Skåne , † August 22, 1806 at Karlberg Castle in Stockholm ) was a Swedish naturalist. He was the grandson of the astronomer Conrad Quensel .

Life

Quensel was the son of Jacob Quensel (1724-1802) and Ulrika Bened. (nee Billberg) and had two younger brothers Isak Johan Quensel (1776–1837) and Eberhard Quensel (1782–1859). He became a student at Lund University in 1783 , where he passed his master's degree in philosophy in 1787. In 1789 and 1791 he went on study trips to Lapland , where he described several new insect species , such as unknown grass and pearl butterflies. The sponsor for the second expedition was Gustaf von Paykull . A species of insect, Bombyx quenseliana, was named after him. From 1791 he was an employee of the botanical garden at Uppsala University, from 1797 doctor of medicine and after 1798 director of the Nature Cabinet at the Academy of Science in Stockholm. Thanks to his efforts, the collection could be expanded considerably. He created a catalog of the holdings and took care of the exchange of duplicates with the universities in Uppsala, Turku and Lund. He also encouraged the members of the academy to donate their own materials. He himself owned a large entomological collection. He also took part in electrochemical experiments carried out by Jöns Jakob Berzelius , Anders Ludvig Hedenberg (1781–1809) and other members of the Galvanic Society.

He later became a teacher of chemistry and natural history at the military school at Karlberg Castle, where he received the title of professor in 1805. He also made a name for himself as a lepidopterist.
