The Greek shepherd ( gr . Ελληνικός Ποιμενικός , Ellenikós Poimenikós ) is not from the FCI recognized dog breed from Greece . The breed is recognized nationally by the Greek Kennel Club (KOE).

Origin and history

The Greek Shepherd Dog is an ancient type of working dog that is believed to have descended from the ancient Molossians and mixed with other mountain dogs in Greece.

description

The Greek Shepherd Dog is a robust, frugal, sure-footed, strong and muscular herd protection dog that was bred for work in the field even under adverse conditions. It is a late developing breed with pronounced sexual dimorphism .

The head is massive, the ratio of the snout to the skull is about 2: 3. The muzzle is broad, with a pronounced stop , the skull is about the same length as it is wide, with a strong occiput . The scissor bite should have pronounced canines . The lips are thick and somewhat loose. The triangular lop ears start at about eye level and are medium-sized, with thick ears and thickly hairy. The cropping of ears is prohibited. The eyes are oval and brown, with darker shades being preferred. The eyelids are close, without ectropion .

The chest is wide and deep and reaches the elbows . The back is broad, muscular and moderately long, the stomach is slightly raised. The loin area is broad, slightly curved and slightly higher than the withers. The tail has a strong attachment; Rods are allowed.

The coat consists of dense stick hair with a pronounced undercoat and forms trousers on the hind legs . The top coat is straight or slightly wavy, either of medium length or long. Male animals have a pronounced mane ; the coat of the bitches is shorter than that of the males.

The colors are black, all shades of brown, white and piebald , with multicolored dogs also appearing. There are no preferred colors.
