action

Nolan delivers his pregnant wife, Abigail, to a hospital in New Orleans . She dies in childbirth, leaving behind the newborn child - a girl. He was born five weeks early and must therefore be connected to a ventilator. Outside, however, Hurricane Katrina is getting stronger and the hospital is being evacuated. Nolan is left alone with his daughter because the ventilator is not portable.

He looks for food in the canteen, where he meets a cook. He is on his way to a nearby hospital that is not affected by the hurricane and gives Nolan change for the snack machines and a little sausage. The water in the basement threatens to fail, so Nolan is looking for a battery for the ventilator. He will find what he is looking for, but connected to the device it turns out that it has to be recharged every three minutes by manually cranking it.

A nurse is also still in the hospital, but on the way out. She promises to get help. The battery gradually deteriorates and stores less and less energy while cranking. As a result, everything Nolan does to save his baby becomes an increasingly scarce race against time. Nolan got the idea to look for radios and use them to send a call for help. An ambulance is parked in front of the hospital. In it he tries to draw attention to himself over the radio, but instead only hears an automatic announcement. The battery for the ventilator now only charges under two minutes. Soon Nolan hears a helicopter flying over the city and runs up to the roof. Rescue workers see him and fly towards him. But rebels shoot at the helicopter, and it flies away again.

Nolan discovers a rescue dog entangled in a rope, which he frees and names Sherlock. He gives him the sausage he got from the cook. A looter comes by and steals the rest of Nolan's food supplies. Nolan discovers that the looter struck down the nurse who came back to help. In the evening two more looters arrive. During a conversation between the two of them, Nolan hears that they want to kill everyone they meet. First he overpowers one of the two, takes his weapon and then shoots the second.

After more than 40 hours the crank of the charger breaks and the weakened Nolan gives his child mouth-to-mouth resuscitation . When he hears ambulance sirens, he collapses shortly afterwards, exhausted. The two are then found by rescue workers. When the baby begins to cry, it is placed in Nolan's arms.
