Grievous Angel is the second solo album by country rock musician Gram Parsons . It was released in January 1974, four months after his death, and was released by Reprise Records .

History of origin

After a short tour with the backing band, Gram Parsons worked with an almost identical band on the material for his second solo album, Grievous Angel . The songs were recorded at Wally Heidler Studio 4 and Capitol Records Studios in Hollywood , California . Then Parsons played a concert at the Country Rock Festival in Baltimore and began work on the successor Sleepless Nights . Before the end of the recordings, however, Parsons died on September 19, 1973 in Joshua Tree , California. The completed album Grievous Angel was released posthumously in January 1974.

meaning

Grievous Angel is considered one of the most important country rock albums. The American Rolling Stone put the album at number 429 of its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time . In contrast, Mark Deming Allmusic rated the predecessor GP as the better album and grievous Angel only as “a very, very good one” (“a very, very good one”). In the German list it reached number 137. At this point, Rolling Stone author Wolfgang Doebeling said about the album it was “full of love sorrow and premonitions, the legacy of a visionary”.

Song info

The alleged live medley from North Quebec , consisting of the Louvin Brothers hit Cash on the Barrelhead and Hickory Wind , which Parsons originally wrote for The Byrds , was actually made in the studio. The live sounds were added later by Hugh Davies.

Emmylou Harris sang along with all of the songs except for Brass Buttons . In addition, Linda Ronstadt can be heard as the female voice on In My Hour of Darkness . Other prominent guest musicians were:

  • Bernie Leadon : lead guitar on Hearts on Fire , Dobro on In My Hour of Darkness
  • Byron Berline : Violin on Return of the Grievous Angel , Medley Live from Northern Quebec and In My Hour of Darkness , Mandolin on Medley Live from Northern Quebec
  • ND Smart : Drums on Hearts on Fire and In My Hour of Darkness
  • Steve Snyder: Vibraphone on Medley Live from Northern Quebec
  • Kim Fowley , Phil Kaufman, Ed Tickner, Jane & Jon Doe: Audience ("Background blah-blah") on Medley Live from Northern Quebec

As on the previous album, there are several cover versions on the album. Besides Cash on the Barrelhead , these are Love Hurts (first recorded by The Everly Brothers ), Hearts on Fire ( Walter Egan ) and I Can't Dance ( Tom T. Hall ),
