A fingering chart is a graphical representation of the fingering for a particular musical instrument . It represents the hand or finger position that is required to produce certain tones on the instrument. The execution is based mainly schematically on the construction of the instrument.

For wind instruments such as the recorder , the fingering table usually shows in chromatic order which holes or keys are to be closed or opened for which note.

For stringed instruments such as the guitar, there are fretboard diagrams that indicate the finger positions on the fretboard . Scales or chords are usually displayed on them , whereby there are often several possibilities to create a certain chord with the available strings. Fingering charts for guitar chords therefore often contain different fingerings for the individual chords.

Fingering tables for chords on keyboard instruments usually highlight the notes to be played on a stylized keyboard.

In contrast to fingering notation or tablature or the fingering with which a certain piece of music is notated, the fingering table thus presents the possibilities of a certain instrument in general.
