history

The church was built between 1774 and 1806 in Baroque style and is still the largest church in the Pannonian Plain . The design goes back to the Piarist brother Osvald Gáspár , the construction management was entrusted to Balthasar Fischer. The church tower burned as early as 1819, after which it was renewed until 1863 and received its current shape.

Structure and equipment

The 73 meter high tower makes the church the tallest building in the city. The tower clock is one of the oldest in Hungary and is still in use today. There are three bells in the tower, the largest of which weighs 2400 kg and is dedicated to the Holy Trinity . The middle bell is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and weighs 618 kg. The smallest bell serves as a death knell. Four new bells were ordered in 1929, but these were melted down during World War II .

Above the main portal there are sculptures with the handover of the heavenly key to St. Peter , on the parapet of the tower the statues of the four evangelists . The main portal is flanked by Ionic columns.

The monumental interior is 62 meters long, 25 meters wide and up to 25 meters high. Ferenc Lohr created the wall decoration. The dome of the church with a diameter of 14 meters shows the Adoration of Mary . Between 1894 and 1900 the interior was restored and only got its current appearance, which is dominated by many pictures. Six side altars adorn the nave, one shows that Mary is being offered the St. Stephen's crown. The high altar, created in 1778, shows the Ascension of Christ.

The organ installed by Alexander Országh in 1885 was badly damaged in the 1911 earthquake and was repaired several times by the Angster company from Pécs . It has been continuously adapted to the current state of the art, the last time in 1992.
