geology
The Great Masurian Lakes consist of a large number of large lakes in a moraine landscape. Characteristic of this landscape are glacial channels between the hills, created by the erosive effect of the meltwater when the glaciers melted , which later took up the lakes.
Lakes
The largest lakes are the Śniardwy (113.8 km²) and the Mamry (105 km²), which are also the largest lakes in Poland. The lakes are connected by rivers and canals, so that a large and dense network of waterways has emerged.
Rivers
The Great Masurian Lakes drain south over the Pisa into the Narew and Vistula and north over the Pregel .
colonization
The Great Masurian Lakes area is sparsely populated. Most of the small towns such as Giżycko , Mikołajki , Pisz and Węgorzewo are located on the banks of the great lakes.
nature
The area is protected by the Masurian Landscape Protection Park, which also has numerous nature reserves.
