The Great Synagogue in Sokal , a city in Lviv Oblast, Ukraine, is also known as the Old Synagogue . The ruin is in a park in the city center and is in very poor condition. The building of the New Synagogue is in the immediate vicinity .

history

The synagogue was probably built around 1700. About 100 years later it was expanded and later renovated both around 1900 and again in 1936. It was destroyed during or shortly after World War II; the extensions were demolished and the roof and ceiling collapsed.

architecture

The main hall is almost square and has two high arched windows on each side. Outside, the walls were optically divided by a pair of pilasters . A richly decorated parapet covered the hipped roof .

There was a lower porch on the west side . It is not known whether it was built at the same time as the main building or whether it is a later extension. Over time, another floor was added, thereby covering the windows. This part was demolished again during renovation work in 1905.

The pictures show a one-story brick building in the Baroque style along the entire length of the north wall . This probably served as a prayer room for women and was demolished during or shortly after the Second World War.

From Bima and Torah shrine only images exist; in this form they obviously did not belong to the original interior design, but rather come from a later period.
