Great Synagogue (2014)

The Great Synagogue in the Ukrainian city of Chernivtsi was built in the first half of the 19th century in what was then the Jewish quarter.

history

The exact construction date is not known; The synagogue is already shown on a city map from 1853.

After the Temple of Reform Judaism was completed in the late 1870s , the Great Synagogue was used by the Orthodox community , although the sermons were in German.

In the 1960s the building was converted into a furniture factory. Extensions were added on several sides and some windows and doors were bricked up. A door was broken through the wall where the niche with the Torah shrine was.

The main hall was divided into three floors.

architecture

The monumental building was built in the style of neoclassicism .

The main hall has the dimensions 16.7 × 30.0 m. In front of it is a portico measuring 11.8 × 3.3 m with a height to the top of the gable of 17.90 m. This entrance area is divided horizontally into three levels by four pilasters and on the west side. The doors and windows have semicircular lintels.

The side walls of the main hall are divided into four levels; there are six arched windows each on the second and third levels and six round windows each on the level under the roof. Some of the openings are walled up.

Inside, the entrance hall is connected to the vestibule. Stairs lead to the women's prayer rooms.

The men's prayer room (the main hall) measured 14.0 × 15.5 m with a height of 12.70 m. The vault is supported by four columns standing in the middle, between which the probably octagonal bima stood. As a result, the ceiling was divided into nine fields, the middle field of this synagogue being larger than the fields around it. This style of the so-called 9-field synagogue first appeared in the first half of the 17th century in the Great Maharscha Synagogue in Ostroh and in the Great Suburban Synagogue in Lemberg and later became more widespread.

The Torah shrine was made of wood and, like the Bima, no longer exists. Where he was, the alcove was widened into a door.
