The Great Synagogue ( French Grande synagogue or Grande temple ) is the largest of 35 synagogues in Marseille . It is located between Rue Breteuil and Impasse Dragon in the 6th arrondissement and is the center of the Jews in Marseille, which with 75,000 members is the most important Jewish community on the Mediterranean outside of Israel. In 1855 the construction of the new synagogue was put out to tender by the consistory , which in 1860, together with the Ministère des cultes, decided on the plans of the architect Nathan Salomon. The synagogue was built in 1863, consecrated in 1864, and classified as a Monument historique in 2007 .
