Synagogue (Avignon)
The Avignon synagogue is located in the former Jewish quarter on Place Jérusalem in the city of Avignon in southern France , where the synagogues have been built again and again since 1236 . The synagogue has been on the list of architectural monuments in France as Monument historique since 1990 .
history
The synagogue was built between 1785 and 1787 and is splendidly furnished. Destroyed by fire in 1845, it was rebuilt from 1846 under the direction of the architect Joseph-Auguste Joffroy and inaugurated on May 20, 1849. It has several community rooms, a ritual bath ( mikveh ), a butcher's shop (see Schächten ), a kosher bakery and a wedding hall.
Although the building is rectangular from the outside, the synagogue space is a classicist rotunda with white columns and a dome . The bima , the pulpit and the benches are made of walnut.
