The route of the two railway company to Grossenhain

The branch railway company to Grossenhain was a railway company in Saxony . The company's only railway line was the Priestewitz – Großenhain connection .

history

Leipziger Bahnhof , Grossenhain's first train station (before 1870)

The public limited company was founded in 1861 to connect the city of Großenhain to the Leipzig – Dresden railway line . It was based in Grossenhain. The investment capital was initially set at ninety thousand thaler . This sum was divided into seven hundred and fifty shares of one hundred thalers each (Series I) and three hundred shares of fifty thalers each (Series II). When the shares were subscribed, 40 percent of the nominal value of the shares was already paid in, the rest had to be paid in in six equal installments.

The company was led by a director and a deputy who were elected by a committee for three years. The director and his deputy had to have full citizenship and be citizens with residence in the city of Großenhain. In addition, they had to deposit at least 300 Thaler in company shares as a deposit; a different arrangement could only be made in exceptional cases. The board of directors was responsible for all aspects of society, especially for day-to-day business. The committee, on the other hand, consisted of 12 shareholders, at least 8 of whom had to live in Grossenhain. The committee should advise and control the board of directors. The work in the committee was voluntary, only any expenses were paid. The members were obliged to take part in the committee meetings, in the event of unexcused absence or absence without sufficient reason, the member concerned had to pay a fine to the public health insurance fund or the local poor insurance fund.

The railway company had to take care of the workers and their families who were won over from foreign communities to build the railway line in the event of illness or accidents, so that they would not be borne by the communities along the railway line.

The Zweigeisenbahngesellschaft zu Großenhain was exempt from trade tax in the year the line was built and in the following three calendar years. The Saxon government secured a purchase right within the framework of a “cleanup” or by resolution after at least 30 years.

The company was obliged to transport military personnel and equipment preferentially and at a discount of 25 percent. In addition, there were requirements that certain items of mail could be carried free of charge.

On October 14, 1862, the only 5.3 km long route was opened. The track gauge of the line, like the rest of the Saxon railways, was four feet eight and a half inches (1435 mm). The Leipzig-Dresdner Eisenbahn-Compagnie (LDE) carried out the operation for the account of the Zweigeisenbahngesellschaft zu Großenhain. The branch line to Großenhain built the Leipzig train station in Großenhain; in Priestewitz there had been a station on the Leipzig-Dresden railway, co-financed by the Grossenhainers, since 1839 .

In 1868 Prussia granted the Cottbus-Großenhainer Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft a concession to continue the route from Großenhain to Cottbus , which went into operation on April 20, 1870.

On July 1, 1869, the Zweigeisenbahngesellschaft zu Großenhain became part of the Leipzig-Dresdner Eisenbahn-Compagnie. With this, the line came to the Royal Saxon State Railways on July 1, 1876 .

Locomotives

The Zweigeisenbahngesellschaft zu Großenhain acquired two used tank locomotives from the English manufacturer Stephenson , which originally came from the Sächsisch-Baierschen Eisenbahn-Compagnie , to operate their route . They were given the names GROSSENHAIN I and GROSSENHAIN II . Both locomotives came to the LDE in 1869 and were retired by the Royal Saxon State Railways in 1876/1877.
