Big fish market is the title of an oil painting by the Flemish painter Jan Brueghel the Elder. Ä. (1568–1625), which was created in 1603 during the Baroque period. It is located in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich (inv. No. 1889) and was previously owned by the Mannheim gallery .
Color and painting technique
The painting is painted with oil paint on oak wood and measures 91.5 × 58.5 cm.
The middle and lower areas of the picture are kept in warm colors , while the sky and the water are in cold colors .
Image composition
The lower third of the picture occupies the landscape with a bay with a small town and its harbor. In the center of the picture is a castle that resembles the Castel dell'Ovo (on Megaride ) in front of Naples . This and many other buildings shown are of ancient architecture and most likely fictional. Brueghel previously made a trip to southern Italy and obviously processed his impressions of it in this picture.
motive
The main motif is a busy fish market on the edge of a European city. In the background you can see a bay, which is heavily frequented by 53 ships or boats, as well as a village and an isolated built-up landscape. A large number of people from different social backgrounds can be seen in the foreground.
In the middle in the foreground the artist himself can be seen with his family and maid (next to the dog, to the left of the two dark figures above the child with green and gold robes).
The riders are probably very wealthy Spaniards.
various
The picture Seaport with Christ's Sermon , which he painted in 1598 , is similar to the present painting in many respects, especially with regard to the motif.
