The Große Segeberger See is a lake near Bad Segeberg . Adjacent villages: Klein Rönnau , Stipsdorf .

Emergence

Within the lakes of Ostholstein, the Great Segeberger See is characterized by a special history.

After a salt dome with gypsum - or Anhydritgestein due salt tectonics was close to the surface went up, could after thawing of glacial permafrost liberated groundwater gradually rock salt dissolve and gypsum in the substrate and voids in the substrate leach ( Subrosion ). The layers of rock and sediment above sagged, leaving depressions that filled with water. This formed u. a. several lake basins, which were initially covered by a contiguous body of water. After a natural lowering of the lake level, possibly due to a sinkhole event at a later time, the original body of water divided into the Großer Segeberger See and the significantly smaller Klüthsee to the northeast.

The Große Segeberger See is part of the gypsum karst landscape of Bad Segeberg and is therefore related to the Kalkberg and its cave .

Distinctive points

  • The Spitzort peninsula (near Stipsdorf) divides the lake into two halves.
  • Vogelinsel is the only island and is located in the northern part of the lake, approx. 500 m north of Spitzenort. The island is usually under water all year round. It only rises above the water surface when the water level is extremely low. This leads to more collisions with boats.

The lake is leased by the Segeberger fishing club. The Segeberger See contains the following types of fish: pike, perch, eel, carp, tench, bream, roach and rudd. Bream grow particularly well and can reach weights of up to 6 kg.

In the city area there is an outdoor swimming pool, a spa promenade, a boat rental, various sports clubs (rowing club, sailing club, boat club). There is also an outdoor swimming pool and a boat club in the Klein Rönnau area. There is a bird sanctuary between Stipsdorf and Klein Rönnau. Another boat club is in Stipsdorf.

Fish death

At the end of January 2019, fish died out , with several thousand fish (mainly roach and bream ) perishing .
