location

The stone, which was discovered by farmers plowing deep at the turn of the 20th century , is located approx. 1.2 kilometers northeast of the old village center of French Buchholz in the immediate vicinity and below Bucher Strasse (L 1135), which comes first from Buchholz cross the federal motorway A 114 and - after passing the boulder on the right hand side of the dam - the railway line of the Berlin outer ring . A traffic connection to the nature reserve "Großer Stein von Buchholz" exists between the motorway and the railway line through a paved exit from the top of the dam.

Petrography

The large stone from Buchholz is a large load that was transported to its current location with the ice masses from Scandinavia during the Glacial Vistula . The age of the smooth boulder is estimated to be around 1400 million years. It has a length of approx. 6.50 m and a width of approx. 4.50 m. Its thickness has not yet been determined, but its weight is estimated at around 105 tons. The mineral composition of the boulder represents a uniform block consisting of a light, medium to coarse-grained granite . The main components of the granite are feldspar , quartz and mica , it is rich in silica (approx. 65 to 80% SiO 2 ). It also contains white potassium feldspar ( orthoclase ), pink calcium-sodium feldspar and, in small amounts, dark mica ( biotite ). It is believed that the stone came from Sweden.

history

Immediately after the accidental discovery, the entire surface of the stone was exposed and it was revealed that it would not be possible to lift the stone as a whole. So some linden trees were planted around the boulder and made accessible as a sight. On December 22, 1931, the Great Stone near Buchholz was placed under nature protection by order of the Berlin Police President. The traffic construction measures carried out in the immediate vicinity in the course of the 20th century meant that the Großer Stein von Buchholz fell out of the public eye. This is one of the reasons why efforts have been made since 1995 to set up a “geological garden” at this point. This could be ceremoniously handed over on May 30, 1999, supported by Buchholz companies, but was hardly maintained in the following years.
