Otto Baumann (born February 25, 1879 in Neu-Ulm , † July 13, 1951 in Harthausen ) was a German officer and later a local politician .

Life

family

Baumann was the son of a general practitioner . He married Anna Maria Kleiter in 1917.

Military career

After graduating from the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich , Baumann joined the 11th Infantry Regiment “von der Tann” of the Bavarian Army in Regensburg in 1899 as a flag squire . He successfully graduated from war school and was promoted to lieutenant in 1901 . His training at the War Academy , which he began in 1912, had to break off prematurely in 1914 as a first lieutenant after the end of the second course because of the outbreak of the First World War .

After mobilization, Baumann trained as an observer at Aviation Department 1b. He was then deployed in Lorraine and France, was promoted to captain at the end of the year and, in 1915, leader of Field Aviation Division 7b on the Western Front . In 1916 Baumann became the commander of the 2nd Battalion of the 7th Infantry Regiment "Prince Leopold" . This was followed by further assignments in staff and troop service, most recently as second general staff officer of the 5th Reserve Division . For his achievements during the war, Baumann was awarded both classes of the Iron Cross , the Wound Badge in Black, the Military Merit Order IV. Class with Swords and the Mecklenburg Military Merit Cross, II. Class.

After the end of the war he was accepted into the provisional Reichswehr . There he was first used in the staff of Reichswehr Brigade 24 and promoted to major on May 18, 1920 . After a brief service in the 20th Infantry Regiment , Baumann joined the General Staff of the 7th (Bavarian) Division in Munich in 1921 . In 1923 he was transferred back to the 20th (Bavarian) Infantry Regiment. Initially employed in the regimental staff , Baumann was commander of the 1st battalion in Regensburg in 1925 and as such was promoted to lieutenant colonel on February 1, 1926 . In 1928 he was given the character of a colonel and retired from military service.

politics

After Karl Deml's dismissal from the US military government on December 1, 1945, he was appointed District Administrator of the Günzburg district . He supervised the admission of political parties and organized the first free local elections in the spring of 1946. With the election of Ferdinand Merckel as district administrator, his term of office ended.
