The great water beetle ( Noterus clavicornis ) is a beetle from the family of the water beetle (Noteridae).

The beetles are 4.2 to 4.5 millimeters long. Their body is elongated ovate-oval and colored rusty red. The pronotum is usually lighter in color.

The beetles live in both standing and flowing water and even in brackish water . You can find them not only in low altitudes, but also up into the low mountain ranges . They occur in Europe , east across Asia Minor to China . They are very common in Central Europe .
