Great Wolfstein
Großer Wolfstein is a natural monument near Bad Marienberg (Westerwald) in the Kirburg district . It is located in the area of the Marienberger Höhe nature reserve near the wildlife park at 555 m above sea level.
The Große Wolfstein is located in the city forest northeast of the center of Bad Marienberg in the direction of the Marienberger Höhe (568 m). Together with its neighbor, the Kleiner Wolfstein, it is considered a legendary border point in the Westerwald, also called Drutgerestein since 1048 . The great Wolfstein is a remnant of a lava flow and was formed about 25 million years ago. Together with the nearby Kleiner Wolfstein, it forms the so-called Wolfstein ridge. Between Bad Marienberg, Bölsberg and Unnau there are basalt block fields that slipped from the basalt coverings of the mountains during the ice ages and overlap the Devonian slate mountains directly on the edge of the plateau . In 1984 the Westerwaldkreis designated the Großer Wolfstein as a natural monument (ND-7143-380).
