Volksburg Großjena
Castle type : Hilltop castle
Conservation status: Burgstall
Standing position : not clear
Place: Großjena

The Volksburg Großjena is an abandoned castle in the area of today's district of Naumburg Großjena .

The local mountain protrudes into the Unstrut valley as a mountain spur , which is separated from the plateau by a wide wall with a ditch. The Volksburg Großjena was located at this point . Presumably, as the name suggests, the castle was a refuge in the territory of the Ekkehardines .

It is not sufficiently proven whether it was the ancestral seat of the Ekkehardines . The burial of Ekkehard I in the urbs Gene still serves as an argument for their ancestral seat in Groß- or Kleinjena (1002 urbe, quae Geniun dicitur , 1033 urbs geni ). In the Annalista Saxo, for example, Ekkehard's funeral is written “in sua urbe nomine Gene in parrochia Mogontiensi in loco ubi Sala et Unstrod confluunt, sepeliri fecit” .
Translated, it means that Ekkehard was buried: "in his castle called Gene in the parish of Mainz at the point where the Saale and Unstrut flow together". According to this document, the castle would be on Kapellenberg in Kleinjena , as the Mainz area was on the right side of the Unstrut.
