Great stone graves near Wahlstorf

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The megalithic graves near Wahlstorf were two megalithic tombs of the Neolithic funnel cup culture near Wahlstorf , a district of Gehlsbach in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district ( Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ). They were destroyed in the 19th century. A grave was examined archaeologically in 1843 under the direction of Johann Ritter . A professor Schröter mentioned a second grave in 1804.

location

Grave 1 was on the right side of the way from Wahlstorf to Wilsen . About 1.5 km north of its former location is the still preserved large stone grave Wilsen .

description

Grave 1 had a pile of red-yellow sand and a stone enclosure that reached very close to the burial chamber in the southwest . The north-eastern end was not preserved. The mound had been ransacked by treasure hunters before Ritter's investigation. The northeast-southwest oriented burial chamber had a length of 8 feet (about 2.4 m) and a width of 6 feet (about 1.8 m). According to Ewald Schuldt it was an enlarged dolmen , according to Hans-Jürgen Beier it was a large dolmen (but rather doubtful given its small size). The wall stones of the chamber were all in situ , but their number has not been recorded. The capstone was already missing from Ritter's investigation. Knight discovered a plaster of white-annealed flint above the ground , interspersed with charcoal . Above that, the chamber was four feet high, filled with layers of sand and split flat stones. Burial remains or grave goods were not found.

No further information is available about grave 2.
