Big stone grave in Lebendorf

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The large stone grave Lebendorf (also called Pohlsberg or Riesengrab ) was a Neolithic megalithic grave in Lebendorf , a district of Könnern in the Salzlandkreis , Saxony-Anhalt . It was destroyed around 1800.

location

The grave was on the outskirts of Lebendorf. It was one of seven artificial elevations in the otherwise flat landscape, but the only one for which large stone constructions were noted. The other six elevations should therefore be regarded as burial mounds .

description

According to largely identical information from JJ Homeyer and Johann Christoph von Dreyhaupt from the middle of the 18th century, there was a very long burial chamber made of large stone blocks (the "giant grave") on the west side of a hill called "Pohlsberg" . In both reports, several wall stones are mentioned on the two long sides and one end stone on each of the narrow sides. The latter two are said to have been of enormous size, with the "upper" (probably the eastern one) being considerably larger than its counterpart. In the middle of the burial chamber some capstones were still preserved. Despite this comparatively precise information, no reliable conclusions can be drawn about the exact type of grave.

In 1846 Christian Keferstein reported that the large stone grave was destroyed "50 years ago". Some ceramic vessels (" urns ") are said to have been found here, but they have not been preserved. A reliable assignment of the system to an archaeological culture is therefore no longer possible.
