Great stone grave Varl

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The large stone grave Varl was a megalithic grave complex of the Neolithic funnel cup culture near Varl , a district of Rahden in the Minden-Lübbecke district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). It was destroyed in the 19th century.

location

The grave was located west of Varl and south of the road to Lemförde in Steinkamper Feld. There were originally at least three other large stone graves in the vicinity: the two large stone graves near Rahden and the large stone grave in Kleinendorf .

Research history

The two graves in Kleinendorf and Varl were examined in 1807 by Georg zu Münster . The exact time of their destruction is unknown. Johannes Heinrich Müller led them in 1867 when they went out.

description

The system had already been partially destroyed when Count Münster examined it. It was oriented east-west and had a length of 30 paces (approx. 22.5 m) and a width of 5.5 paces (approx. 4.1 m). Most of the capstones had already been blown. The exact type of grave cannot be determined with certainty based on this information.

Finds

The two graves in Kleinendorf and Varl had already been cleared before Count Munster's investigation. He found only shards of decorated and undecorated bowl, shards of other vessels and an arrowhead from flint . However, it is not known which finds come from which grave.
