The large stone grave Zaalhof was a megalithic grave complex of the Neolithic western group of the funnel cup culture in Emmen in the Dutch province of Drenthe . His remains were examined in 1846. The site was built over in the early 20th century. The grave bears the van Giffen number D44a.

location

The grave was at the Zaalhof (or Saalhof), which no longer exists today. The area was largely undeveloped until the 19th century and is now located between Kerkhoflaan, Wilhelminastraat, Julianastraat and Molenstraat. There are numerous large stone graves still in existence in the vicinity: West-northwest is the large stone grave Westenesch (D44), north - northwest the large stone grave Emmen-Schimmeres (D43) and north-northeast the large stone grave Emmerdennen (D45).

Research history

The facility was first mentioned in 1660 by Johan Picardt , who did not recognize it as a grave, but only described it as "some large marked boulders". Caspar Reuvens made a drawing in 1833. Leonhardt Johannes Friedrich Janssen carried out an excavation in 1846.

description

The plant was largely destroyed during the investigations in the 19th century. Reuvens found only two wall stones, one of which had a series of blast holes. Janssen's investigation revealed that the burial chamber had a length of about 5.5 m and a width of about 2 m.

Finds

During his investigation Janssen was able to recover some fragments from ceramic vessels from the funnel beaker culture.
