The Elisabeth mine was a small, short-term mining operation at the southern foot of the Dünsberg , in today's municipality of Biebertal , in the district of Gießen , which extracted Brauneisenstein. It is one of the mines in the Lahn-Dill area .
Origin and history
The mining claim Elisabeth emerged as a result of controversy for a about a decade running dispute between Philip Gath one hand and JW Buderus sons other, on Berechtsame the pit Friedberg . On March 18, 1864 it was enfeoffed on iron ore, brown stone (manganese ore), pebbles and alum slate and received the first name of Philipp Gath's wife. In 1866, 12 miners extracted 1,571 tons of brown iron stone in open-cast mining.
On October 17, 1868, the Elisabeth mine field was sold to the Saarland mining group Gebrüder Stumm for 6150 thalers . After several short operating phases, the Stummsche Bergverwaltung informed the secret mountain Riemann on January 12, 1895 that the Elisabeth mine had been completely closed. The reason given was that "the value of the low-grade ores does not cover the costs incurred".
On March 12, 1936, the mine field became the property of Buderusschen Eisenwerke, which carried out investigations on the mine field in 1949 and 1950. The spate iron stone found here turned out to be unsuitable for mining.
